A rubric is "a device for organising and interpreting data gathered from observations of student performance. More predisely, it is a scoring guide that differentiates between levels of development in a specific area of performance or behaviour". (http://teacher.scholastic.com/professional/assessment/roomforubrics.htm) Below is an example of a rubric used to encourage strong reading. It was created by Year 2 & 3 students. |

Reading
too fast. Some
people can understand me. Everyone
can understand me. Using
no expression. Using
a little bit of expression. I use
lots of expression. People
can't hear me. Some
people can hear me. Everyone
can hear me. Not
concentrating on the words. I don't read on,
re-read or sound out words I don't know. Sometimes
I concentrate on the words and read on, re-read and
sound out words I don't know. I
always concentrate on the words and read on,
re-read and sound out words I don't
know. I
don't concentrate on what the writing is
about. I try
hard to concentrate on the meaning of the
writing. I
always concentrate on the meaning of what I am
reading. I
don't stop at a full stop. Sometimes
I stop at the full stops. I
always stop at the full stops. |
