Students at Warialda Public School are given the opportunity to join the Tournament of Minds team, under the guidance of Mrs Margaret Haug. Here students develop their teamwork and higher order thinking skills. Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 students choose to enter a specific section of the competition eg; Maths / engineering Social sciences English. They must prepare a solution to a problem posed, over 6 weeks, and then present their solution on the tournament day, where students from many other schools around the region compete. Tournament day is held in Tamworth on a Saturday in Term 3. Team members are responsible for creating all props, music, scripts etc as part of their solution and must not receive any outside assistance. On the tournament day team members must also solve a spontaneous problem, which they have not seen before, testing their flexibility and "thinking on their feet" skills. Those students involved work extremely hard to solve the problems given and are rewarded with a great sense of achievement and fun not only on Tournament Day, but over the many weeks their prepare their solutions.
