Student Mediators

The Mediator Program is used at our school to help students solve problems. All of the mediators are Year 6 students. They encourage younger students to sort out their playground problems before they involve a teacher. Mediators wear bright yellow vests and sit under the gum tree near the COLA, with a big wooden traffic light next to them. They also wear special badges. Their pictures are often displayed on the Captains' Board near the canteen so other students know who they are.

The mediators encourage students to solve their problems using three steps.
Step number one - STOP (red)
Students stop and think about the problem and think about what they can do.
Step number two - THINK (amber)
Students have some options of things they can do. They are:

  • forget the problem
  • tell an adult
  • ask and share
  • compromise and find a solution for all parties

Step number three - DO (green)
Students choose a solution that suits them most and that they think will work the best.
Once they have chosen this they try to make it work.

Student mediators also perform other roles in the school. They run the students sports shed before school, at recess and at lunch time. They also open the shed near the old residence each morning for students to put their bikes and scooters in.
