THE
HISTORY OF WARIALDA PUBLIC SCHOOL 1901 - 1950

- In
1904 the Convent School opened. Public School enrolment
dropped to 95.
- In
1911 dangerous condition of the school repaired by G. H.
Edmonds for 112 pounds seven shillings.
- In
1914 petition by parents have headmaster removed.
Replaced by Mr. (later Inspector) G. Martin in
1915.
- In
July 1916 P formed. President Rev P.A. Smith, Secretary
Mr. A. Gettings, Treasurer Mr. A. Stewart. Visit by
Deputy Chief Inspector Disrict Works,- "At Warialda I was
struck by the primitive character of our buildings.
Warialda surprised me. It is a nice little town, well
managed municipally, and the school buildings reflect
little credit on us".
- In
1919 visit by Supervising Engineer:-"The residence,
although unhealthy in its present condition, and may be
responsible for bronchial trouble as regards the
teacher's family, can be placed in hygenic condition".
The residence was re-roofed by E. Anderson at a cost of
213 pounds, 10 shillings and 9 pence. Super-Primary
Course leading to Immediate Certificate introduced.
English, History, Geometry, Mathematics, Business
Principles and Needle Work. Super-Primary assistant
appointed.
- In
1923 repairs and additions completed by Anderson and
Rogers at a cost of 198 pounds
- "The
Prevalence of flies, mosquitoes and creatures render
meals during the summer months unpleasant". The kitchen
and living room of the residence were fly-proofed by P.
Hanson for 8 pounds and 3 shillings.
- In
1929 school population 168. Headmaster had composite
class of 24 in 6th; 22 in 7th; 2 in 8th - total 48. Visit
by Minister for education, Mr. Drummond, who reported
"not too great a task for a first-class Headmaster". All
lady teachers asked for transfers because at their
boarding establishment, "They were terrorised by drunken
men and their rooms were infested with vermin and rats".
Alternative accommodation was found and the ladies
stayed.
- In
1930 school closed at 3.30 p.m. instead of 4.00
p.m.
- In
1933 a new room was built using Public funds and
Unemployment Relief Funds at a cost of 512 pounds -
officially opened in February by B. M. Wade
M.L.A.
- In
1934 Roger Moore's electricity connected to the residence
in April and two lights to the school in May.
