Warialda Public School

Student Representative Council Policy

Rationale

At Warialda Public School we value student participation in leadership roles. The SRC is a medium by which to encourage students to participate in leadership roles, preparing them for the more demanding responsibilities required in Year 6, such as School and Vice Captains, House Captains and Peer Mediators. Year 5’s will be given additional opportunities to serve as part of the SRC fulfilling their requirements to run for School, Vice and House Captain positions in the following year.

SRC Meeting Format

  • Welcome by School Captain.
  • Business from last meeting.
  • Class Representative Reports.
  • Year 5 Representative Reports.
  • Business to be carried into next meeting (jobs assigned to particular representatives.)

Guidelines for SRC Membership

  • Each class from Year 3 to 6 will elect a representative for each term. (Note one representative for each class not each year within a class.)
  • Where possible the class representatives should not be the School or Vice Captains
  • Classes from K – 2 will have a Year 5 person appointed on a termly basis to represent them.
  • In addition to Class Representatives Year 5 students will be given the opportunity to fill the following roles:

-       Environmental Representative  (Responsible for facilitating school cleanliness, looking after gardens etc.)

-       Fundraising Representative                 (Responsible for running one fundraising event each term)

-       Uniform Representative.                      (Responsible for monitoring and encouraging students to wear their uniforms)

-       Technology Representative.                 (Responsible for assisting Miss Withers in maintaining the school web and intranet site.)

  • A teacher representative will be present at each meeting to assist in the running of the meeting.
  • The responsibility for running each meeting will be given to the School and Vice Captains.
  • Before each meeting class teachers should arrange a time to have a class meeting about issues in the school or their class to be raised by their Class Representative. It is the responsibility of the class teacher to organise and facilitate this meeting, not the Class Representative.
  • The SRC will meet twice a term, in Weeks 2 and 6.
  • Year 5 students who wish to run for School, Vice or House Captains in Year 6 must have successfully served at least one term on the SRC, have received 60 merit tickets in that year and have participated in school Public Speaking competitions.
  • A student will be deemed to have unsuccessfully completed a term on the SRC if they;

-       don’t turn up for meetings (not including being absent from school.)

-       fail to give adequate reports to the SRC in their roles.

-       are asked to withdraw from the SRC due to reaching Level 3 of the Code of Discipline as outlined in the Student Welfare and Discipline Policy.

Indicators of Success

  • Students feel they have a role to play in the decision making processes of the school.
  • Students see the issues they raise through the SRC as being addressed.
  • Teachers are more aware of student issues.
